A large group of business people gathered at the Courtenay Lodge Hotel in Newcastle West this Monday morning for a briefing and Q and A session on the EU Stability Treaty with Minister of State Brian Hayes and IBEC Head of Regional Policy, Reg McCabe.
The meeting was organised by Fine Gael Deputy for County Limerick Patrick O’Donovan as part of the last week of efforts to convey the message that a Yes vote will be good for businesses in Limerick and Ireland. Minister of State at the Department of Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Brian Hayes, said that a Yes or No Vote would not change the size of Ireland’s debt but that it could affect the methods that will have to be employed to pay it off. He said that in order to continue having the level of jobs announcements that have occurred in the last year, it was necessary to prove that Ireland was a secure place for foreign investors to put their money. Central to that effort would be ratification of the EU Stability Treaty, the Minister said.
Mr McCabe said the future of Ireland’s economy was dependent on showing the world that we are a sound, open economy with a stable currency. Voting Yes would send just that message out, he added. A lively Q and A followed with Minister Hayes and Reg McCabe answering questions in relation to the Stability Treaty, as well as future budgets and Public Service reform.
Deputy O’Donovan thanked the large crowd that had come as well as Minister of State Hayes and Mr McCabe. He concluded by saying that he hoped the speeches had done enough to convince those in attendance that a Yes Vote was an important building block in returning Ireland to economic sovereignty and success.
