O’Donovan: “€291,000 secured for Great Southern Trail”

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Patrick O’Donovan has welcomed an allocation of €291,000 from Minister of State Michael Ring for the Great Southern Trail. This announcement from the Department of Rural Development comes after a separate recent allocation of €1million from the Department of Planning, Community and Local Government.

“I’m delighted to receive this news from Michael Ring. The Great Southern Trail is a fantastic tourism and recreation amenity in Co. Limerick and these investments will make a major impact on the standard of the amenity.”

Patrick O’Donovan said that since becoming Minister with responsibility for Tourism and Sport he had put a group in place including representatives of the Council and the Local Development Companies, West Limerick Resources and Ballyhoura, to develop the tourism product in Co. Limerick and this was project that has been prioritised by the group.

“I’m very happy that we have been able to make progress on attracting investment for this amenity. Recently Limerick City and County Council have taken charge of the trail and will administer funds from the Government. I will continue to work with the Council and the Local Development Companies to ensure that the plans we are working on to develop the tourism product for Limerick continues to be developed.
