NRA: Speed reduction at Dromkeen Cross will be considered

Added October 6th, 2011

Fine Gael Deputy Patrick O’Donovan has been told by the National Roads Authority that a request for a speed limit reduction at Dromkeen Cross, the site of several accidents in recent months, will be seriously considered.

“This is an issue that was first highlighted to me by Cllr Mary Harty when I was elected and it’s clear that this is something that needs to be resolved sooner rather than later. It shouldn’t take one more accident at this cross for action to be taken,” he commented after the meeting with the NRA this Tuesday.

“I was told at that meeting by the NRA representatives that they will consider a request from Limerick County Council for the much-needed speed reduction at Dromkeen Cross.”

Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council and local councillor Mary Harty welcomed the news from the NRA, adding that a reduction in the speed limit at the cross was the “only solution” to the dangers being encountered by pedestrians.

“I was first elected to the Council in 1999 and this reduction in the speed limit is something I’ve been agitating for since then,” said Cllr Harty.

“Up until now the NRA wouldn’t consider a speed reduction at the site so this is certainly good news. There are four or five commercial units all very close to this cross and school buses stop there going in both directions so you have a considerable amount of foot traffic there at times. There have been considerable improvements introduced by the NRA at the cross over the years but the danger remained and as far as I’m concerned a reduction in the speed limit is the only solution.”

One of the most recent accidents to take place at the cross occurred when a bus carrying the Limerick Under 21 hurlers was in a collision with a car. Thankfully nobody was seriously injured in that incident.
