Limerick’s Minister, Patrick O’Donovan TD has welcomed the decision of the Joint Policing Committee, which is a member of, to approve and proceed with the with the new Smart CCTV Program. The program is the first of its kind in Limerick and is being funded jointly by the Government and Limerick City and County Council. The Government have put forward €250,000 towards the cost of the scheme.

“This is a great initiative and one which has been worked on since the last Government allocated funding to the Council through the Hinterland Study. It has been developed jointly by the Council working closely with the Gardaí, members of the local community and the Joint Policing Committee which I am a member of. I believe it is important to acknowledge all those who have worked to develop the scheme and bring it to this stage.”

The scheme which is being rolled out in fourteen communities will see cameras placed at agreed locations in; Abbeyfeale, Adare, Askeaton, Caherconlish, Cappamore, Castleconnell, Croom, Foynes, Kilmallock, Murroe, Pallasgreen, Patrickswell, Newcastle West and Rathkeale. The placing of the cameras is being done in consultation with the local communities.

“This scheme is being designed to help Gardaí detect and investigate crimes that happen and also to react to any emergencies. The cameras will also assist in the planning of traffic management in these towns and villages and will hopefully also help in combating illegal dumping and improve animal control.”

Minister O’Donovan added “This program will see forty four cameras in fourteen locations being placed across the County. We all are anxious to see how the scheme progresses and if it is as successful as we hope it will be, then I think there is every reason why it should be extended in these fourteen locations and also introduced to other towns and villages across Limerick.”
